The skinny on … Bobby Bond
Rochester, NY 1968, Bobby was born into a talented, musical family – his parents were involved in the highly renowned art form of DRUM CORPS. In Ontario, Canada, as Mom & Dad Bond enjoyed their hobbies of judging, teaching & running the Drum Corps, Bobby began his personal introduction to music and drumming by joining a local drum & bugle corps at the tender age of 5, where he became a cymbal player. By age 7, he moved up through the percussion ranks to play marching snare drum.
In ’79, the Bond Family was on the move again – back to good ol’ Rochester – where Bobby joined The Greece Shoreliner Cadets. Never one to stay still for long (a quick study, absolutely!), he moved right up to the Parent Corps, The Greece Cadets, in 1981.
Throughout his teen years, Bobby learned and honed his craft in Drum Corps, learning from high school teachers, band directors, and through private instruction. His advanced percussion education also included summers with Ruth Kahn at the Eastman School of Music.
By 1982, Bobby successfully auditioned & made the percussion section of The Garfield Cadets. With this Corps, Bobby placed 3rd in the DCI World Championship, then completed the journey by becoming DCI World Champions in 1983 & 1984. Knowing his love of drumming and realizing his talent was only just beginning to shine, Bobby changed his career from Corps to hard core (!), and thus began his percussionist era by joining a local rock group.
Bobby stumbled upon the drum company, Pearl, in 1983, and quickly became a loyal musician – to this day, he exclusively plays Pearl Drums. Since 1985, Bobby & his Pearl drum set have been seen all over Rochester, playing in several rock groups & show bands. You’ve seen Bobby in Evolution, Why Not, Kamyleon, Gravity Box, Reality Check, East Coast Connection, 3FU, Coil, The Long Live Rock Show, Mr. Hand, Jeff Cosco Band and currently, with national recording artist D DRIVE and GARY LEWIS AND THE PLAYBOYS.
You will never hear a better drummer in Rochester – people say you could set your watch to Bobby’s beat. He can lay down a groove like no other drummer around – his talent is far beyond Rochester, but since he’s here, we’re thankful and will follow him wherever he plays; to listen to him jam with his friends, share a laugh, and watch him work his magic with his bandmates up on stage.
